Description
3rd edition
The book was co-authored by employees of the National Institute of Monuments Bc. Ondřej Cink, Mgr. Daniela Staňková, Mgr. Tomáš Wizovský and the head of the team of criminologists who found the reliquary – JUDr. František Maryška.
The publication The Reliquary of St. Maurus describes in an original way the creation and contemporary events surrounding this Romanesque monument. The collective of authors tries to capture in a popular form the essence and beauty of this exceptional goldsmith’s work, which is exhibited in the vault room at the Bečov Castle. On 130 pages, the reader receives comprehensive and elaborate information about the reliquary, its creation, dramatic discovery and restoration. The book is supplemented by a number of high-quality photographs and drawings from previously unpublished materials. An equally significant feature of the publication is the chapter dedicated to the Bečov Castle and Chateau, the new “home” of the Reliquary of St. Maurus since 1888. Based on preserved inventories, the book presents the scope, richness and beauty of the original furnishings of both castle buildings, where the reliquary, together with other objects of gallery value, had a highly representative function.
The main goal of the 1st edition of this book is to introduce the wider public to one of the most valuable movable monuments of the Czech Republic and also to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its discovery. This is the first publication that describes the reliquary of St. Maurus in detail. Thanks to this book, even the average reader can gain an overview of the art of the period, the experiences of the restorers, and the atmosphere in which the extensive, dramatic search that resulted in its discovery took place.
The book was graphically designed and published by FORNICA GRAPHICS.
